Dear Friends,

With your help, I have been elected to the Arlington County School Board and will begin my term of office in January 2008. I offer my heartfelt thanks to all of you who shared your advice, put up yard signs, hosted events at your homes, made telephone calls, provided financial support, helped in many other ways, and voted! Moving from parent activist to School Board member has been a team effort.

As a parent, a leader in our schools and a former Arlington Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, I plan to bring leadership, vision and experience to the School Board. I believe in the ABC’s of school success: achievement, budget and community.

• We can help every child achieve by promoting parental involvement in education, expanding foreign language instruction, and improving nutrition.
• We should reduce administrative costs to promote fiscal responsibility.
• We can strengthen our community by providing opportunities for all students to perform community service and by working together to make Arlington schools the best they can be.

The School Board is addressing many important issues during this school year, including elementary school boundaries and capital improvements. I will continue to meet with citizens, parents, teachers and administrators to discuss these and other issues. I am committed to ensuring that the School Board’s decision-making process is inclusive, transparent and fair.

Please join me for my swearing-in ceremony and reception on Monday, December 17th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. (swearing-in at 6:30 p.m.) at the Arlington Education Center, 1426 N. Quincy St. If you can attend, please RSVP to: abby@abbyraphael.org.

I look forward to working with you, the entire Arlington community, APS staff, and the members of the School Board to promote success for all of our students.

Many thanks,

Abby Raphael

Good for us, good for the environment.
